Yoga's Role in Fighting Systemic Injustice: A Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s commitment to social justice and equality, Rooted in Radiance organized a yoga wellness event in partnership with FITDC. The event was designed to bring people from diverse backgrounds together to promote wellness, mindfulness, and unity at the historic Howard Theatre.

The event included a yoga session, meditation, spoken word and a guided reflection highlighting famous quotes and speeches from Dr. King. I AM THE DREAM encouraged attendees' that building a dynamic peaceful foundation within oneself is one of the most important steps in advocating for systemic change.

I AM THE DREAM featured:

Breathwork and Intention Setting

20-minute restorative flow to MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech

Journal and Affirmation Session

Spoken word performance by Dr. Rebecca Dupas

20-minute restorative and cleansing flow

Local Black owned business vendors including Mane Rhodes and Jaliyaa Coffee

As an added value, lululemon donated 100 yoga mats for attendees to begin their well-being journey and ZenWTR donated 300 bottles of water for the attendees to hydrate themselves.

Overall, the yoga wellness event was a great example of how yoga can be used as a tool for social change and community building. By honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, the event encouraged participants to reflect on their own commitment to social justice and inspired them to take action in their own communities.
